Anything that increases wind drag causes increased fuel consumption.

Ski racks, bicycles, rooftop travel boxes etc. come to mind.
Remove them from the vehicle as soon as is practical.

Watch you coolant temperature gauge.

From cold start to normal temperature, no more than 3 or 4 miles should have passed. If the engine temperature never rises to its proper level as designed, you are wasting fuel.
HOW?
First: The engine- and transmission oils must reach proper temperature to minimize friction.
Second: When a computer controlled engine runs too cold, it may never go into "closed loop" (ask your technician what that means). This can cause the engine to run "rich" (too much fuel), wasting fuel. Of course this also affects emissions greatly.
Have the cooling system checked out regularly. The thermostat may be faulty or missing. An engine must run at the proper temperature, as designed by the manufacturer, to run most efficiently.
